In this new blog series, we're introducing you to the people behind the success of Airtime Rewards: The Airteam!
First up is Al, our Lead Front End Developer.
Firstly, what is your role at Airtime Rewards and what does it involve?
“Lead Front End Developer”
The Front End team is responsible for creating the look and feel of our mobile and web applications.
This usually involves taking design files created by a designer and bringing them to life through code.
At a team level, my role involves a mix of line management duties as well as providing hands-on support, ensuring we meet our shared goal of delivering application features and updates.
Outside of the team, I spend quite a bit of time liaising with other departments/stakeholders such as the product owner and technical leadership team, providing a voice for the team as well as utilising my knowledge and experience to help deliver features to our members.
Can you tell us about your Airtime Rewards journey?
I began my journey at Airtime Rewards back in November 2017. Before this, I had been working at different agencies as a WordPress developer.
What first attracted me to the role was the opportunity to work on exciting new products using the latest technologies, all whilst being able to have a direct impact on driving the business forwards.
Since I joined as the first Front End developer, the company has evolved, and I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to grow with the business. I have enjoyed building the team and stepping into a leadership role. We now have more products and retailer partners than ever before, and I am excited for what the future holds.
What does a typical day as a Lead Front End Developer look like?
Each day can bring different challenges, but a typical day may look like the following:
I start my day with a morning catch up meeting, followed by a daily stand up session with the Front End team.
Once we are all aligned to a shared goal, I will then review and merge code into our codebase until lunchtime.
And then in the afternoon, I am usually in meetings or continuing to review/merge code.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Airtime?
I would have to go with the products that we are creating. It's great to be surrounded by like-minded individuals, all striving towards a shared goal.
What project are you most proud of?
Improved Accessibility support - I believe that it's very important to provide a great app experience to as many users as possible. Several months ago, we started looking at how we could improve screen reader support in our main mobile application. After receiving some excellent feedback from members since launching this update, I am extremely proud of the efforts made by the Front End team.
Can you give us any hints about future features?
There are lots of exciting features in the Airtime Rewards Roadmap. Unfortunately, I am unable to share any more details than that at this moment in time.

Any advice for someone looking to get into Front End Development?
Stick with it! I think there is an increasing rise in developers feeling overwhelmed in today's advanced tech landscape as there is so much to learn. What I will say is that it gets easier with time, and there has never been a better time than now to invest in yourself. There are plenty of job opportunities, and we are now able to build some pretty amazing applications with relative ease compared to previous generations.
When not working at Airtime, what do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy playing my electric guitar, watching and playing racket sports and working on technical weekend projects (the latest one being home automation). I also like to spend time socialising with friends and family, eating out and going to the cinema being my favourites.
And finally, why should everyone be using Airtime Rewards?
The simplicity! Add a card using our free app, spend with our retail partners and start passively earning.
Go on then, listen to Al. Download Airtime Rewards here, if you haven't already!
